Societies around the globe are undergoing substantial and complex transformations on many fronts. These include social, cultural, economic, political, technological and environmental transformations that present significant challenges and contradictions.

International human rights frameworks have been reinforced but there continue to be serious violations of human rights around the world. It remains difficult to apply and uphold these international regulations.
While technological advances have brought on greater interconnectedness in terms of exchange, cooperation and solidarity, cultural and religious intolerance has become increasingly widespread. As a result, profoundly unsupportive policies are being implemented in many parts of the world.

These ongoing transformations and strong contradictions represent a global challenge with direct consequences on education and social pedagogy which requires careful consideration.

Education can contribute to a more just and mindful society by making available various educational materials that aim at increasing knowledge regarding human rights and infringements. This is why the Basque government, the District Council of Gipuzkoa and the Donostia – San Sebastián Cityhall, by means of the Aiete Educational Resource Centre, is organising the first edition of the International Seminar on Human Rights Educational Resources in support of this cause.
